The Cloud Extravaganza

Clouds are fascinating to almost everyone. From small kids to scientists working on highly specialized fractal theories, they present an awesome subject to imagine about!
They are equally fascinating to every photographer.
Scientifically, clouds classified as Cirrus, Cumulus, Stratus etc. They all have different shapes and forms.

As a photographer, clouds present us with perfect 3-dimensional anchor points in the flat expanse of sky. (Although, technically speaking, clouds have dimensions in the range of 1.3 to 1.7, as per the fractal theory!)

Above photograph was taken at Pashan – Sus road area of Pune, MH, India. It was shot with a Canon EOS 5D Mk II camera and 24-105 f4 lens. Shooting mode was Av, ISO 200, f/7.1 and matrix metering.

The turbulent sky in the adjoining photograph was a sight to see. Black and white depiction helped in making the effect even more dramatic.
I chose a wide angle lens for this, which helped in getting wide expanse of the sky in the frame and removing most of the foreground area. The dark silhouettes of trees against light make nice anchors to give the dimension and perspective to the frame.

Cloud shapes are always very interesting. They give the emotive punch to the photograph.
The patterns in this photograph nicely indicate the strong winds up there with their direction.

Clouds Extravaganza

Lingering clouds on a colourful evening

Clouds appear different in different seasons.
In winters, we tend to see spectacular colours in clouds, specially at sun down times. Colours of clouds during sunrise and sunset are different.
At sunrise, the edges start getting brighter and the deeper tones last for very short time.
At sunset, it is the reverse. It is then that you see the deep tones of spectrum colouring the clouds.

The photograph on top left was clicked at Pashan – Sus road area of Pune, India, during sunset time. The deepening colours add an element of cheerfulness and uncertainty together.
I enjoyed the transition of colours from violet to orange and the black silhouette of the treeline in the foreground. Pushing down of the horizon creates ample space for the skyscape.
